Damascus

One of the best example where to find geometric patterns in Damascus is in the Umayyad Mosque. It is one of the oldest and most sacred mosques in the world. It features mosaic work, stone carvings, painted ceiling panels and star-based geometry in decorative borders.
The 8-pointed stars and 8 Fold Rosette and variations based on squares and octagons are more common in historical Damascene architecture. In Syrian crafts and inlaid woodwork, multi-pointed stars (8-, 10-, 12-, and 16-pointed) can all be found depending on the artisan and period.
In my design inspired by Damascus, I was drawn to the geometry of the 8-pointed star, a shape that appears in various forms across Islamic art and in the old houses in the city.
